Our First Camper Adventure!

Well, it’s official! We are campers!

We decided a while ago to take our camper for it’s first real maiden voyage over Easter weekend. We wanted to take it somewhere close, but outside of Ohio. We decided to take the opportunity to take it down to South Carolina to visit the Congaree National Park. Our trip was full of ups, and a couple downs. This first post will focus on our first night, spent at a KOA in Wytheville, VA.

After working a full day, Scott and I left for our trip. We loaded up the camper, the pup, and were off! We had originally planned on taking it just to Parkersburg, WV to a little camping park. However, we decided after driving about an hour, that we wanted to take it further so we wouldn’t have as long of a drive the next day.

If you’ve been through this drive, you know we had a lot of mountains and not much else in the way.

Our first drive was going well. Freddy was doing “fine” in the backseat (usually, he rides in the front seat so he wasn’t too happy about being vanquished to the back). The weather was good, the camper was behaving, and we were fully caffeinated and ready for the drive!

The KOA we stayed in was located in Wytheville, VA. I cannot say enough how easy it was to come in last minute to this location. We arrived around 2 AM. I ran up to the office, opened their “late arrival” box, and there was ONE site left for the night! Fate! We filled out the paper, and went off to our campsite! It was a pull-through with all the hookups! Very lucky for new campers coming in the middle of the night.

However, we were unaware of what was coming for us. Weather, and otherwise (more on that later). Little did we know, there was a massive storm line coming for us, that lead all the way to our destination. We spent the night huddled in the camper (after Scott set up in the pouring rain), waiting for the incredibly high winds to blow us over.

On our next post: How does a trip go from bad to worse? A high wind storm+a camper+downed trees=??? Stay tuned!
