Day 20- Redwoods National Park

Today we head to the Redwoods National Park in northern California! We ate breakfast by the river, and headed out for a quick drive to the Redwoods. We stopped in Oregon to grab some supplies. What we didn’t realize was that California has agriculture inspection stations. Luckily, we weren’t stopped. I would have hated to get rid of the produce we just bought!

Our campsite was at the Grassy Flat Campground in the Six Rivers National Forest. This was to be one of our least favorite campsites, as the site was incredibly narrow! The door to our camper opened into a bush, so understandably we weren’t too pleased.

Our drive was so short that we went off to explore the Redwoods. We passed through Crescent City, and found a pull off on the beach to eat lunch while looking at the ocean. It was just off the 101, and this was our first glimpse at the ocean since seeing it on the cold and rainy peninsula of Washington! We also headed up to the Crescent Beach overlook, which gave amazing views of the ocean!

We continued down the 101 through the Redwoods. We went to the Big Tree (which is HUGE!) and hiked through the Cathedral Tree trail. Redwoods are the tallest living trees in the world, and can live to be 2.000 years old! Many of the Redwoods were chopped down for lumber, so preserving the park was important to the survival of this species. If you’ve never seen a Redwood, which I hadn’t, it is honestly overwhelming how large they are! It hurts your neck to try to see the entire tree! The hike we went on gave us a pretty good look at the park and the landscape that allows these giants to grow so large!

We ended our day at Klamath Overlook, which is supposed to be a good place to watch for whales. While we didn’t see any whales, it was certainly a gorgeous place to relax!
